It turn out it was a just faulty Microsoft Wireless Mouse, but unfortunately I had gone well down the road of reinstalling the operating system before I discovered it and unfortunately again all the previous System Restore options had been overwritten. office not opening xls files - Microsoft Community.
The File tab in Word and Excel in Office is not working and consequently cannot open, print etc. The operating system is Windows 7 Pro my favourite operating system so no suggestions of upgrading to W 10 please. The problem arose at the same as none of the desk top icons responding to a left click on the mouse, although they would open with a right click and selecting open. This only applied to desktop icon, not the task bar which opened normally.
It had no effect on Word or Excel in the Microsoft Office program. I have tried a System Restore to a couple of different dates with negative result and also reinstalled Office without effect.
